Top Tips for Cut Flowers

The doorbell goes and a friendly delivery driver is there holding a beautiful bespoke bouquet of flowers just for you. Receiving a thoughtful floral gift can help brighten anyone’s day, but knowing what to do with the flowers after you receive them is a whole new world!

Here at Mansi Florist, Nick and the team are passionate about sharing their flower knowledge and tips with customers to ensure they get the very best from their blooms. All our bouquets are sent out with flower care tips and free packet of flower food, which helps the lucky recipient care for the flowers easily.

Our top tips for cut flowers:

1. Carefully remove packaging

If your flowers arrived in cellophane or paper, you can carefully cut this away with scissors. Often bouquets will have string tied round the stems to help keep the design shape, this can be removed to create a looser, relaxed look.

2. Clean vase

Dig out your favourite vase or container that you can display your flowers in. Always give it a good rinse with clean water to ensure there is no dirt or unwanted bacteria in the vase, before filling with fresh tap water. Add the sachet of flower food to the water that came with your bouquet, as this is full of nutrients for the flowers.

3. Snip those stems

Take each stem and cut (using sharp scissors) at a 45 degree angle about 2-5cm off the bottom. Then ‘strip’ any leaves on the stem that will be below the water line.

4. Find the perfect display space

It is best to display your flowers away from the extremities – they don’t like it too hot or too draughty – so to help your blooms be happy for longer keep them away from warm radiators and direct sunlight.

5. Give some love

Every few days give your flowers some TLC including checking the water level, change the water if its looking murky and remove any stems that are dying off.
