Flower of the Month - Roses

Flowers are love’s truest language – Park Benjamin

Our flower of the month is the Rose. Delicate, stunning colours, high petal count, and beautifully scented, the rose is the iconic flower of love and one of the world’s most popular cut flowers. In February especially the rose is the flower of choice with our customers – romantic red rose bouquets, elegant white rose arrangements and pretty pink rose hand tied are the most requested options for delivery on Valentine’s Day.

Here at Mansi Florist, Nick and the team carefully source all our stems from trusted suppliers in Holland to ensure we work with only the finest flowers. There are over 150 different species of roses – so we have many different varieties to choose from all year round! Roses are often grown in warmer climates such as Mexico, Columbia and Africa as they thrive in the warm climate. From beautiful long stemmed red roses, pink spray roses to large headed yellow roses, our florists use a mix of roses all year round to create beautiful bouquets and wedding flowers.

The language of Roses

One of our favourite things about flowers is the meaning behind them  or as us florists say ‘the language of flowers’. Roses in particular have some lovely things they symbolise through colour and here are a few of our favourite rose colours and meaning behind them:

Red roses: the most traditional rose and symbol for love and romance. The most requested flower for Valentine’s Day, but is also a lovely colour choice all year round for anniversary bouquets and weddings.
Pink roses: pretty pink roses represent grace and sweetness. Pink roses are a popular choice instead of red roses on Valentine’s Day to send your sweetheart or best friend.
Yellow roses: cheerful shades of yellow roses symbolise friendship and joy. A perfect choice to give to a dear friend to show them the happiness they bring.
White roses: elegant white roses represent innocence and purity. Often traditionally used in wedding flowers as they can also represent new beginnings, and look gorgeous against other wedding flowers in bolder colours.
Purple roses: a pretty rose colour, purple roses symbolise pride and enchantment. Purple roses make a lovely choice for wedding flowers, especially when mixed with white roses.
Cream roses: cream roses actually have a completely different meaning to white roses, standing for charm and thoughtfulness.
Blue roses: A more unusual, modern choice, blue roses symbolise mystery and intrigue – a great option for a secret admirer?
Peach roses: A soft pastel peach shade of roses represents sincerity and gratitude, making peach roses a perfect choice for a thank you bouquet.

How to look after your roses

Have you been lucky enough to receive a beautiful bouquet of roses? Here is Mansi Florist top 5 tips on how to look after them!

  • Use sharp scissors to snip 3-5cms off the base of the stem at a 45 degree angle.
  • If possible, it is always best to leave the thorns on the stems as they can help the rose last longer.
  • Carefully remove any leaves that will fall below the water line in the vase.
  • Place the roses in a clean vase, filled with fresh tap water and add the sachet of flower food supplied by your florist.
  • To help the roses bloom for longer avoid displaying the roses in a draughty area, in strong direct sunlight, near a heat source (such as a radiator) or by a fruit bowl.
